Daytona International Speedway
Is located in Daytona Beach Florida and is the home of NASCAR’s “Super Bowl”, The Daytona 500 -NASCAR’s most prestigious race. In addition to two NASCAR races annually, the track also hosts Speed Weeks that features races from ARCA, AMA Superbike, Motocross and the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. The track features multiple layouts including the primary 2.5 miles high speed tri-oval, a 3.5 mile infield
road course, a 2.95 mileroad course for motorcycles, and a quarter mile kart track. The Speedway’s infield includes the Lake Lloyd, which has hosted powerboat racing. The speedway is owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation.
The track was built in 1958 by NASCAR founder William France Sr. to host the races that were formerly run right on Daytona beach. The high banking on the turns allowed for higher speeds and fans could now get a better view of the race. In 1998, lights were installed around the track to coincide with NASCAR moving certain high profile races to Saturday nights. Daytona International Speedway is now the third largest outdoor sports venue with lights following Losail International Circuit in Qatar and the largest lit outdoor venue – Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The speedway has been renovated three times: a redesign of the infield in 2004, and two instances of the track being repaved, in 1978 and most recently2010.
