Gila River Arena
(formerly jobing.com Arena) is a sports and entertainment arena in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, Arizona and is home of the Phoenix Coyotes. It sits on West Maryland Avenue just across from University of Phoenix Stadium, and is part of the Westgate City Center entertainment and retail complex.
The arena’s construction broke ground in April 2002 and the Coyotes moved into the arena in late 2003. The Coyotes spent their first 7+ seasons in the America West Arena (now the US Airways Center) in downtown Phoenix after relocating from Winnipeg in 1996. The America West Arena was not old, as it had opened as the home of the Phoenix Suns only four years earlier in 1992, but it was primarily designed for basketball and was hastily retrofitted for hockey. The arena floor was just barely large enough to fit a NHL size rink and many seats had obstructed views. As a result of the shortcomings, its hockey capacity had to be cut down from over 18,000 seats to just over 16,000 – making it the second-smallest capacity in the NHL at the time. A small section of seats on the lower level actually hung over the boards, obstructing the views for upwards of 3,000 spectators.
Beginning in 2005, Gila River Arena has been host to the Arizona state high school basketball, volleyball, wrestling and cheerleading tournaments in a mega-event called “February Frenzy”, as the result of a formal agreement between the city of Glendale and the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA).
Location: 9400 West Maryland Avenue, Glendale, Arizona 85305 Opened: 2003 Capacity: Hockey – 17,125 (17,534 with standing room); Concerts – Up to 19,000; Basketball – 18,300
