Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati OH

The Great American Ball Park

is located in Cincinnati, Ohio and is the home of the Cincinnati Reds. Opened in 2003, it replaced the Reds’ former home, Cinergy Field, which was known as Riverfront Stadium from 1970 until 1996.

Great American Ball Park was built between an area where Cinergy Field once stood and U.S. Bank Arena that is referred to as “the wedge”. Due to the limited available space in the wedge and the site’s location right on the Ohio River, a portion of the construction of Great American Ball Park required the partial demolition of Cinergy Field.Great American Ballpark Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati OH

The original address of the park was 100 Main Street, however, it was changed to 100 Joe Nuxhall Way to honor of the Reds’ late pitcher and broadcaster who died in 2007. Nuxhall’s traditional sign off phrase, “Rounding third and heading for home” is depicted on the rear of the third base stands on the north side of the park.

In right center field, two smokestacks that are replicas of the old Ohio River steamboats of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, flash lights, belch smoke and launch fireworks in conjunction of a great play by the Reds. There are 7 baseball bats featured on each of the smokestacks which symbolize former Reds great Pete Rose. Since Major League Baseball has restricted his number from being displayed, the 14 bats are the Reds’ way of “retiring” his number with the rest of the Reds’ greatest players.

If a Reds player hits the “Hit Me” sign located between the Power Stacks located in right field, a randomly selected fan will win a vehicle that’s located on top of an elevator shaft beyond the center field fence.
