Joe Louis Arena, Detroit MI

Joe Louis Arena

is a multi-purpose arena located in Detroit, Michigan and is best known as the home of the Detroit Red Wings. The Arena is named after boxer and former heavyweight champion Joe Louis, who grew up in Detroit. JLA is one of three remaining NHL arenas without a corporate sponsorship name (the others being Madison Square Garden and Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum). It is also the fourth oldest venue in the NHL; The Garden and The Coliseum plus Rexall Place in Edmonton are older than JLA.

Joe Louis Arena, Detroit MIJLA  sits adjacent to Cobo Hall on the bank of the Detroit River and has its own station on the Detroit People Mover. JLA also hosts college hockey events as part of “College Hockey at The Joe” – a series of tournaments that include the Great Lakes Invitational and the CCHA Championship Tournament.

Several plans for a replacement arena have surfaced in recent years, including proposals for the expansion of Cobo Hall that require JLA to be demolished. However, there are currently no firm plans for replacing or remodeling the Arena. In 2009, the Red Wings announced that they would not renew their 30-year Joe Louis Arena lease with the City of Detroit, but have committed to staying in JLA through the 2011-12 season.
