Madison Square Garden

or simply put “The World’s Most Famous Arena” is located at 7th and 8th Avenues, between 31st and 33rd Streets, in New York City and is known as MSG or The Garden. It is the home of the New York Rangers, the New York Knicks, the St. Johns University Red Storm Mens basketball team and the New York Liberty of the WNBA.

Madison Square Garden, New York NY

"The Rotunda"

Opened in 1968, the current Garden is the fourth building to have the been named Madison Square Garden, and it’s the longest active major sporting facility in the New York metropolitan area. As of the start of the 2010–11 NHL and NBA seasons, Madison Square Garden is the oldest arena in the NHL, and the second oldest in the NBA – following Oracle Arena in Oakland.

The arena is also host to the Big East Men’s Basketball Conference Tournament, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus when it comes to New York City (although the Izod Center and Nassau Coliseum also host the circus each year), the annual pre and postseason NIT tournaments, the NBA Draft, the Millrose Games track and field meet, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and has hosted both the Democratic or Republican National Conventions.

Most major concert tours will stop at the Garden because of the prestige of playing at the “World’s Most Famous Arena.” Elton John holds the record for most appearances at the Garden with 62; in honor of this achievement, a banner with the number “62” has been raised to the roof in the rotunda. Billy Joel holds the record for most consecutive nights sold out at 12, and also has a banner raised in his honor.

Before the rise of Las Vegas as the “capital” of the boxing world, MSG was the ultimate venue for the largest fights in the world. In 1951, Rocky Marciano beat Joe Louis in what proved to be Louis’ last fight and two of the three Ali vs. Frazier fights took place in the Garden. The Garden has also been called the “Mecca” of Professional Wrestling; due to the many  wrestling matches to take place there through the years, including the first Wrestlemania.
