O.co Coliseum
is a multi-purpose stadium located in Oakland, California and is the home of the Oakland A’s, and the Oakland Raiders. It is part of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum complex, which consists of the O.co Coliseum and Oracle Arena. The stadium was originally called Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, and then had a series of name changes though the years including: Network Associates Coliseum, McAfee Coliseum and Overstock.com Coliseum and is commonly known as The
Oakland Coliseum or The Coliseum.
With the Florida Marlins scheduled to move into their new ballpark in 2012, the stadium will become the last stadium in the United States that is home to both a Major League Baseball and NFL team.
The Coliseum features an underground design where the playing surface is actually below 21 feet below ground level. When fans enter the stadium they find themselves walking on the main concourse at the top of the first level of seats. This, combined with the hill that was built around the stadium to create the upper concourse, means that only the third deck is visible from outside the park, this gives the Coliseum the illusion of being a short stadium.
The stadium was poorly maintained for most of the late 1970s with its condition was most noticeable during baseball season, when crowds for A’s games twice topped at less than 1,000. A game in April 1979 against the Seattle Mariners had only 653 fans in attendance, which led to the very unflattering nickname – the “Oakland Mausoleum.”
In 2010, two sites have become leading candidates for a new stadium for the A’s: a site in San Jose located near HP Pavilion at San Jose and a proposed stadium in Oakland named Victory Court. Under any such replacement proposals, the Oakland Raiders would presumably continue to play football in the Coliseum, although there have been proposals for a new football-only stadium in the Bay Area which the Raiders would share with the San Francisco 49ers and there have been very strong rumors regarding the Raiders’ possibly returning to Los Angeles.
