is located in downtown San Diego, California and is the home of the San Diego Padres. Before Petco Park opened, the Padres shared Qualcomm Stadium with the San Diego Chargers.
Petco Park is different from many other Major League stadiums built in the same era by refraining from building in the retro style of new stadiums. The stadium is designed in Indian sandstone and stucco and its exposed steel is painted white; All of the seats are dark blue, as opposed to the red and green of the new retro stadiums. Fans are treated to a view of San Diego Bay and the San Diego skyline past the left field seats, as well as a view of Balboa Park, which contains the San Diego Zoo, beyond center field.
The official address of Petco Park is 19 Tony Gwynn Way, in honor of the longtime Padres great who wore that uniform number during his major league career, spent entirely with the team. A 10-foot statue of Gwynn was unveiled outside of the stadium in 2007.
The “Park at the Park”, is a grass slope beyond the outfield fence that allows fans to sit and watch games for $5. On non game days, the area is a free local park for area residents. One of the most unusual features of Petco Park is that the Padres bullpen is located behind the left-center field wall while the bullpen for the visiting is in foul territory on the first base side.
Every time the Padres hit a home run, a foghorn is sounded and fireworks are shot off in center field. The foghorn is a recording of the horn of the Navy’s USS Ronald Reagan, a nuclear aircraft carrier that is stationed in San Diego.
