is a multi purpose arena located in Atlanta, Georgia and is home of the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Dream, of the WNBA. The arena was the home of the Atlanta Thrashers; however, due to lagging attendance and a string of losing seasons, the Thrashers were relocated to the MTS Centre in Winnipeg and renamed the Winnipeg Jets. The Arena also hosts several Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men’s basketball games every season. Philips Arena is owned by the Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority and operated by Atlanta Spirit, LLC, the group of investors that owns the Hawks.
The arena is laid out with the club seats and luxury boxes built completely along one side of the arena, and the general ticket holders seating on the other three sides (the type of layout was later duplicated at Ford Field in Detroit, and UCF Arena in Orlando, FL). This layout is a major contrast to many other new arenas, which have their luxury boxes and club seats located around the entire arena, which causes the upper deck(s) to be, in some cases, 2 to 4 stories higher. The layout at Philips Arena was done so that the bulk of the seats would be closer to the playing surface while still making a sufficient number of club seats and luxury boxes available.
On the exterior, angled steel columns supporting the roof facing the downtown area spell out “ATLANTA” and the side facing the Georgia World Congress Center spells out “CNN” since the arena adjoins the CNN Center.
The arena also hosts major concerts, WWE and Ice and Children’s shows.
Location: 1 Philips Drive Northwest Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Opened: 1999 Capacity: Basketball – 18,729; Concerts – 21,000+ (Depending on configuration); Wrestling – 16,697
