Texas Motor Speedway

is a 1.5 mile Quad Oval Super Speedway located in Fort Worth, Texas and is considered a “sister” track to the Atlanta Motor Speedway and the Charlotte Motor Speedway due to the three tracks being the same length and having the same general configuration.

Due to the 24° banking the track is extremely fast, with NASCAR qualifying speeds in excess of 190 mph and top speeds well over 200 mph. However, as the track surface wears over the years, speeds have dropped. TMS is still NASCAR’s fastest non restrictor plate track.

In 2001, the CART series was scheduled to race at TMS, but due to its high banking and smooth surface, 21 of the 25 drivers that drove the track complained of dizziness and disorientation while driving. On board telemetry measured sustained G Force’s in excess of 5G’s while driving which is well in excess of what the human body can withstand for extended periods of time. Due to 1000 HP Turbo-Charged engines and low downforce super speedway aerodynamic packages, the speed of the Champ Cars on the track was well in excess of 230 mph – 30 mph faster than NASCAR and faster than the IRL cars of the time. Paul Tracy set the track record at 236 mph, a mark that still stands today. Due to concerns of driver safety, CART cancelled the race just hours before it was to begin and never returned to the track.

The Speedway also features the IZOD IndyCar Series and holds major concerts as well.
